Male Fern

Dropteris 'Barnseii' is an excellent specimen fern for a moist woodland setting, forming a clump of delicate, upright fronds which have a slightly ruffled appearance.  This selection of the deer-resistant deciduous male fern was selected for its very narrow fronds, upright growth habit, beautiful foliage and ease of growth.  The plants are well-behaved and not at all invasive. Foliage is attractive all summer long, and may be used as greenery in flower arranging. It appreciates a mulch of leaves to retain moisture during the summer. Clumps may be easily divided in spring, every 3 to 4 years. Deciduous.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Dryopteris are easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. All ferns prefer  consistently moist, humusy soils that is rich in organic matter. If the soil dries out the fronds will yellow. Site in locations protected from strong winds to prevent damage to the fronds. Crowns may be divided regularly.
