Little Bluestem

About This Grass

‘Little Red Fox’ is a compact native bluestem with outstanding colour and tidy form. It emerges blue-green in spring, then gradually develops rich red and burgundy tones as the season progresses—finishing with glowing coppery reds in fall.  Its narrow, upright blades form a dense, clumping habit that stays neat and vertical, making it ideal for smaller gardens, borders, and mass plantings where full-size bluestem would be too large. Delicate flower heads appear in late summer, adding texture and extending interest into winter.
Little Bluestem is exceptionally tough and drought tolerant once established, This grass thrives in sun and heat while offering strong seasonal interest and wildlife value.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Schizachyrium ‘Little Red Fox’ performs best in full sun, which ensures strong upright growth and vivid red fall colour. Plant in average to dry, well-drained soil and avoid rich or wet sites, particularly in winter. Water regularly the first season to establish roots, then reduce watering—once established, it is very drought tolerant. Fertilizer is unnecessary and can cause floppy growth. Leave foliage standing over winter, then cut back in early spring to 10–15 cm (4–6 in).
