Switch Grass

About This Grass

A compact, refined switch grass with strong structure and excellent seasonal colour. ‘Prairie Dog’ forms a neat, upright clump of narrow blue-green foliage that stays tidy and vertical throughout the growing season—no flopping, even in rain or wind.

In late summer, airy flower panicles rise just above the foliage, adding texture without overwhelming the plant’s clean form. As fall arrives, the foliage shifts to warm golden tones, extending interest well into autumn and winter. Its smaller stature makes it especially useful where traditional switch grass would be too large.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Panicum is a very easy native grass that is adaptable to a wide range of conditions. It prefers moist, fertile soil but will grow in any soil from sand to clay. It is drought tolerant once established. It will perform best in full sun, flopping over if it gets too much shade. It is tolerant of wind and salt making it a good choice for a more exposed site or an area that might be salted in the winter.
