SALVIA [Perennial Salvia]   

Dense spikes of flowers are held above grey-green leaves. Good for cutting. Reasonably drought tolerant and resistant to insect damage. Good resistance to deer browsing.

 

nemerosa ‘Marcus’

A new introduction from Germany, this dainty little salvia was discovered as a chance seedling. Dark violet purple flowers. Great for edging and small containers. Will rebloom if deadheaded. Ht:20cm (8")

nemerosa ‘Viola Klose’

Outstanding spikes of violet purple flowers that are deeper and more intense in colour than any other perennial salvia. Has a tight mounding habit making it ideal for containers and small spaces. Ht: 38-45cm (15-18")

pratense ‘Rhapsody in Blue’

Similar to ‘Eveline’ but in blue. Flowers have a two tone look in blue and violet. Wonderful colour and loads of bloom. Ht:60cm (24")

 


 

SARUMA

henryi  Like Asarum canadense on steroids. This native of China has lovely soft cordate foliage and buttery yellow flowers over a long bloom period. Thrives in partial shade. Excellent groundcover gradually spreading to make a nice dense clump. Ht: 45cm (18”)

 


 

SEDUM [Stonecrop]

A very large and interesting collection of fleshy succulent plants suited to the sunny rock garden or border. Excellent choice of foliage and flower types and a range of growth habits from mat forming to taller varieties suitable for the border. An excellent selection of sedums is available at the nursery.

 

 

‘Abbeydore’

The reddest sedum to hit the market! The compact plant is covered in late summer with bright red flowers. Ht: 45cm (18")

x ‘Autumn Joy’

Big heads of salmon pink flowers that age to bronzy red. A great, easy care perennial that should be in every garden. Ht: 45-60cm (18-24")

‘Bertram Anderson’

A beautiful plant especially when used as an edger or in a container.  The rounded fleshy purple leaves are topped with dusky pink flowers in late summer.  Ht: 15cm (6")

‘Maestro’

Sport of ‘Matrona’.  Large blue green leaves on bright purple, upright stems. Huge flower heads bear red buds and light pink blossoms. Ht: 61- 72cm (24-30”)

‘Red Cauli’

Petite sedum with blue green foliage and bright red stems. Forms a low compact mound.  Small clusters of pale pink buds open to bright pink flowers, which age to red. Deep maroon seed heads extend the interest into the fall. Ht: 25-31cm  (10-12”)

repestre ‘Angelina’

A wonderful recent introduction, ‘Angelina’ shines with brilliant golden-yellow foliage. It is low growing and mat forming with needle like evergreen leaves. It looks like a miniature spruce except that it is gold.  Originating from Croatia, this low growing sedum has long season appeal. Yellow flowers appear in the summer.  Excellent for containers where it will develop a trailing habit. Wonderful fall colour. Ht: 7-5-15cm (3-6")

spectabile ‘Hot Stuff’

Shortest spectabile type on the market. Forms a tight, upright mound of green foliage topped by brilliant purple pink flowers in late summer. Great in containers. Ht: 30cm (12”)

spectabile ‘Neon’ (Showy Stonecrop)

A very popular sedum in our garden because of its very bright fall colour. The flowers are brilliant rosy -magenta pink and the foliage is light green. Ht: 61cm (24")

spectabile ‘Pink Chablis’

A variegated sport of Sedum ‘Brilliant’ that is an improvement on ‘Frosty Morn’ because the flowers are a vibrant pink colour. Broad blue green leaves with white edges are held horizontally. Ht:35-46cm (14-18")

‘Xenox’

A compact dark foliage sedum. Emerges in spring with green and mauve foliage which darkens to burgundy in summer.  Clusters of red velvet buds open to rose flowers. Ht: 51-61cm (20-24”)

 


 

STOKESIA [Stokes Aster] 

Deep green foliage forming neat mounds. Large cornflower like decorative flowers. Looks like a double blue shasta daisy. Blooms mid to late summer.  A winter mulch is necessary in our area in case we don’t get good snow cover because it tends to remain evergreen.

 

 

‘Honeysong Purple’

A true royal purple with a hint of red that deepens as the flower ages. Contrasting white stamens and purple tinged stems add to the appeal. Large 10cm flowers have petals with pronounced serrated edges. Ht: 30cm (12")

 


 

THALICTRUM

Beautiful airy perennials well suited to the woodland garden.  The foliage resembles columbines or maidenhair ferns in its delicacy. Prefer some shelter from the hot sun but will tolerate full sun if they are kept evenly moist.  See through plants that look best grouped. Good cut flowers. Combines well with Actea (Snakeroot).

 

‘Black Stockings’

Tall nearly black stems hold huge heads of fluffy lavender pink flowers. Airy green foliage. Summer bloomer. Ht: 120-180cm (4-6 ft)

rochebrunianum ‘Lavender Mist’

Magnificent sprays of delicate lavender purple flowers are produced on tall, dark purple stems. Self-supportive; rarely needs staking. Distinctive foliage forms a nice low lacy mound. Ht:150-180 cm (5-6 ft)

 

TIARELLA [Foam Flower]

Closely related to the Heuchera, this woodland dweller forms low clumps of toothed foliage with airy sprays of light cream or pink flowers in spring. Flowers can last for up to a month.  Likes a well-drained humus rich soil. Trim each spring because the foliage stays evergreen. These varieties are clump forming. Wonderful combined with hostas in a woodland garden or shady rockery.

 

 

‘Black Snowflake’

Deeply dissected, glossy green leaves with black-purple centres. New growth is nearly all black. Lightly fragrant white, star-like flowers. Ht: 20-30cm (8-12")

‘Cygnet’

Very long, deeply lobbed leaves. Fragrant pink flowers in early spring. Ht: 35cm (14"), 45cm (18") in flower

‘Jeepers Creepers’ 

Large, boldly marked foliage and cream flowers on a plant with a running habit. Each plant will spread to a 61cm (24") patch.

‘Spring Symphony’

Profuse displays of very dark pink flowers above deeply cut freckled foliage. Ht: 15cm (6") 25cm (10") in flower

 


 

TRICYRTIS [Toadlily]

A unique plant for shady areas. Arching stems produce a bizarre display of star shaped flowers every fall. Long lasting cut flower. If frost threatens cut the flowers and they will last for weeks in a vase.

 

‘hirta ‘Moonlight’

Chartreuse sport of hirta ‘Variegata’. Brilliant foliage colour for the shade garden, Ht: 51cm (20”)

‘latifolia ‘White Towers’

TRILLIUM [ Wake Robin] 

A much sought after woodland plant, these lovely wild flowers are treasured for their beautiful spring blooms. They grow best in rich woodland soil. These plants are nursery propagated and supplies are limited.

 

erectum {Stinking Benjamin}

Bears erect flowers and slightly wider leaves. The flowers are usually maroon and have an unpleasant smell. Ht: 30cm (12”)

grandiflorum { Great White Trillium}

The thick rhizome produces a single stem topped with three horizontal leaves. Above the foliage is a three petalled white flower with yellow stamens. Ht: 30cm (12")

 


TROLLIUS [Globeflower]

Trollius are a striking and colourful addition to the late spring garden.. The large buttercup like blooms range from single to fully double often with pronounced stamens.  The foliage is lush and green and forms an attractive clump that looks good all season.  They thrive in sun or partial shade in humus rich soil.

 

‘Cheddar’

Semi-double flowers in softest primrose yellow. Very choice and hard to find. Ht: 61-70cm (24-30”)

‘Golden Queen’’

Golden orange wide bowl shaped flowers with prominent and upright stamens stand in contrast to the dark green foliage. Ht: 61-90cm (24-36”)

 

 

UVULARIA 

grandiflora {Merry Bells}

A choice woodland plant, native to Eastern North America. Long yellow bell shaped flowers on drooping stalks. Nursery propagated. Ht: 38 cm (15")

 


VERONICA [Speedwell]  

This is a very showy and useful group of perennials with upright spikes of flowers of varying heights. Some of the best true blue shades are to be found among this group.  Many make excellent cut flowers.  Deadheading produces rebloom.

 

longifolia ‘Eveline’ 

A new introduction with deep rosy purple tapering flowers. Long flowering period throughout the summer. Ht: 55cm  (22")

prostrata ‘Aztec Gold’

Adds great foliage and flower colour to the garden all season long. Sun-proof brilliant gold leaves form a wide, low, spreading mound. Short spikes of sky blue flowers appear just above the foliage. Does well in part shade. Ht: 15cm (6”)

spicata ‘Foxy Lady’

The first bicolour veronica.  Sport of ‘Red Fox’ with a dwarf habit and bright fuchsia pink and white candy striped flowers.  Long blooming period.  Ht: 30-38cm (12-15”)

 


 

VERNONIA [New York Ironweed]  '

Native to eastern and southern United States. Excellent back of the border plant for fall colour.

 

crinita ‘Mammuth’

Tubular shaped rosy red flower clusters grace this attractive plant in late summer. Will grow best in moist soil. Ht:127cm (50")

 


 

VIOLA  

These charming little plants have heart-shaped leaves and

fragrant flowers.  They prefer partial shade and an evenly moist location.

 

‘Mars’

Deep purple veins make a stunning contrast against the dark green leaves. Delicate fragrant lavender flowers.  An outstanding plant for the woodland garden.

‘Rebecca’

Softly scented flowers are creamy white with flecks of deep violet around the edges. Delightful vanilla fragrance. Ht: 20cm (8-10")
