Canadian Shield® is a cold hardy and black spot disease resistant rose released in 2017 form the 49th Parallel Rose Breeding Program in Vineland, Ontario. It has dark red flowers that are very full (over 40 petals) and is self-cleaning. This rose blooms profusely throughout the growing season. It’s the result of a cross that includes ‘Frontenac’, a rose in the Explorer Series, an earlier series of Canadian-bred roses.
Roses prefer moist, well drained, slightly acidic soils but are known to be quite adaptable to soils except for very wet areas. Mulching roses is recommended but be sure to keep the mulch away from the stems of the plants. Prune in spring, cutting back to just above large buds. Plant in full sun with good air circulation for best performance. Deadheading will promote more continuous bloom.
