Hydrangea serrata Tuff Stuff Red

Mountain Hydrangea

'Tuff Stuff Red' is the newest edition to the Tuff Stuff series of mountain hydrangeas. These unique hydrangeas fare better in cold weather than their cousins, macrophylla or big-leaf hydrangeas.  Large, lacecap flowers are a deep pink-red color which is set off by lustrous, deep green foliage. This reblooming hydrangea begins blooming in early summer on old wood and continues to produce flowers on new wood through autumn, ensuring a showy, abundant display. Small, rounded habit gives Tuff Stuff Red extra versatility in the landscape - grow it as a foundation planting, low hedge, edging, or specimen.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

'Tuff Stuff' prefers moist, well-drained soil. Supplemental water may be needed in very hot weather. In our area afternoon shade is beneficial. Like all hydrangeas, it benefits from a 5-7 cm/2-3"layer of shredded bark mulch. Tuff Stuff hydrangea should not be pruned except to remove any dead wood in spring. This is done after the new growth begins to emerge on the stems. Older plants can have their oldest stems thinned periodically. Tuff Stuff Hydrangea are listed as a zone 5 plant but we have been successful in our zone 4 garden in a sheltered spot.
