Smokebush

Cotinus ‘Velveteeny®’ is a compact smokebush valued for its rich, velvety purple foliage and tidy, rounded habit. The dark leaves provide bold contrast throughout the growing season, while airy plumes of smoky pink flowers appear in early summer, creating the signature “smoke” effect above the foliage. Its smaller size makes it easier to incorporate into modern landscapes, borders, and foundation plantings compared with larger traditional smokebush varieties.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Plant in full sun for best foliage colour and flowering. Grow in average, well-drained soil; smokebush is tolerant of poor soils, drought, and urban conditions once established. Avoid overly wet sites. Minimal pruning is required, but plants can be cut back in late winter or early spring to maintain size or encourage vigorous new growth.
