A tough, evergreen native groundcover prized for year-round interest and exceptional cold hardiness. ‘Massachusetts’ is a selected form of bearberry that forms a dense, low mat of glossy, dark green leaves, making it an excellent choice for slopes, rock gardens, edging, and erosion control. In spring it produces small soft pink, urn-shaped flowers, followed by bright red berries that persist into fall and winter, adding ornamental and wildlife value. The foliage often takes on bronze or reddish tones in colder weather, extending seasonal interest.
Grow Arctostaphylos ‘Massachusetts’ in full sun to part shade in very well-drained soil—excellent drainage is essential, especially in winter. It prefers lean, sandy, or gravelly soils and does not tolerate heavy clay or consistently wet conditions. Water regularly during the first season to establish, then reduce watering; once established, it is highly drought tolerant. Avoid fertilizing and excessive mulching, as rich soils reduce performance. Hardy to Zone 3, this long-lived, low-maintenance groundcover is ideal for difficult, dry sites where few plants thrive.
