Heucherella 'Solar Eclipse' has attractively scalloped leaves of red brown bordered in lime green. Its evergreen foliage grows vigorously to form a dense mound. White flowers appear in late spring. 'Solar Eclipse's distinctive colours pair beautifully with the dark colour of Black Snakeroot as well as with the golden tones of Hostas like 'Designer Genes'.
Heucherellas are a hybrid cross of a Heuchera and Tiarella. Like their parents they prefer rich, well drained soil of neutral pH. Amend the soil with organic material like compost but do not add peat moss which they dislike. In our area Heucherellas grow best in morning sun, which brings out their lovely colours. We have not had success with them in a lot of shade. Their foliage is evergreen and should not be trimmed in the fall. In the spring when new growth starts to emerge from the crown trim away old, damaged leaves.
