Umbrella Plant

Darmera peltata is a big, bold waterside plant with huge round, lobed leaves. It spreads slowly to form a dense clump. The ball-shaped soft pink flowerheads appear in early spring on wiry stalks before the plant leafs out. It needs an area with protection from hot afternoon sun and consistent moisture.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

This is a substantial plant that needs a large space. It grows well in average garden soil in shaded areas as long as moisture requirements can be met. It is also effective in moist woodland areas, native plant gardens, boggy areas or along streams and ponds margins where its rhizomes help stabilize the banks.
