Bugleweed

Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip' has chocolate-coloured leaves with burgundy highlights. The plants form a dense mat of small, shiny leaves acting as an effective groundcover. Small blue flowers appear in masses in late spring. The foliage grows densely enough to smother weed growth. This is an incredible crevice plant for part shade areas. If you have a retaining wall in the shade or part sun, or a little nook you need to tuck a plant, then 'Chocolate Chip' will be perfect for you!

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Ajugas are low maintenance ground covers for partially shaded sites. They perform best in morning sun and afternoon shade but will grow in more shade although they may not perform as well. They spread by runners, and if happy will make a dense mat. Ajuga is tolerant of a broad range of soil conditions and will even tolerate very poor soil. It will not tolerate wet sites and will be susceptible to crown rot where air circulation is poor and the site does not drain. The foliage is evergreen, although in our climate, foliage may be a little tattered by the spring. Be patient because fresh growth will quickly replace damaged foliage once the weather warms. To keep the plant looking neat spent flowers may be snipped off.
