Schizachyrium ‘Ha Ha Tonka’ is a spectacular new variety. Dense, fine hairs along the leaves catch the light and create a luminous halo effect that makes this grass glow—especially when backlit by sun. The foliage is a complex mix of blue-green, with subtle segments of red-orange and grey that deepen as the season progresses. It has a rigid, upright habit that gives strong vertical structure in the garden. This exceptional cultivar has a rich pedigree: seed was originally collected by Cassian Schmidt at Ha Ha Tonka State Park in south-central Missouri, then grown, crossed, and refined in collaboration with Piet Oudolf. The result is a grass with extraordinary texture, movement, and seasonal presence.
Grow ‘Ha Ha Tonka’ in full sun for best colour and upright habit. Plant in average to dry, well-drained soil and avoid rich or wet sites, especially in winter. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then reduce watering. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant. Fertilizer is unnecessary and can cause floppy growth. Leave foliage standing over winter for structure and wildlife value, then cut back in early spring to 10–15 cm (4–6 in).
