
In the plant trials we have visited 'Blue Paradise stands out for its colour and habit. It is is very upright and columnar and maintains its upright habit through fall. At just over a metre tall , this grass will be the perfect backdrop to your garden. True to its name, ‘Blue Paradise’ has striking silvery blue stems in summer. In the fall, this grass takes center stage as the leaves develop a deep wine purple color. In early fall tiny tan seed heads appear on the top half of the stems.
Schizachyrium scoparium can be found in dry fields, prairies and woods from Maine to Alberta and Idaho, south to Florida and Arizona. It is tolerant of a wide range of soils including dry and poor soil. All of the selected forms of this native exhibit the same toughness and hardiness but with better plant habit. Since it has a very attractive winter habit cut it to the ground in the spring before new growth emerges. It is best utilized as a vertical accent in perennial borders or as a screen.
