About This Grass

A graceful native ornamental grass with exceptional movement and seasonal colour. ‘Dancing Wind’ forms an airy, upright clump of fine blue-green blades that sway beautifully in even the lightest breeze—living up to its name from the moment it emerges.

As summer progresses, the foliage takes on subtle reddish tones, intensifying to rich copper, orange, and burgundy shades in fall. Delicate flower panicles appear in late summer, adding texture and extending interest well into winter. This is a tough, adaptable grass that thrives in sun and heat while remaining refined and elegant in mixed plantings.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Andropogon gerardii ‘Dancing Wind’ is an easy, low-maintenance native grass that thrives when given sun and good drainage. Plant it in full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily), as too much shade can lead to weak growth and flopping. It prefers average to dry, well-drained soil and tolerates clay provided it isn’t winter-wet; in heavier soils, planting in raised beds helps to protect the crowns from rot.  Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots, then reduce irrigation—once settled, it is highly drought tolerant. Avoid fertilizer, as rich soils encourage soft, floppy growth; this grass performs best in lean conditions. Leave the plant standing through winter for structure and wildlife value, then cut it back in early spring to about 10–15 cm (4–6 in) before new growth begins. Expect a slow start in spring because that is normal for Big Bluestem.
