About This Grass

Andropogon ‘Red October’ (a selection of Andropogon virginicus, commonly called broomsedge or bluestem) is a striking ornamental grass prized for its seasonal colour and architectural form. It forms a tidy, upright clump of fine, blue-green blades in summer that transition to dramatic shades of red, copper, and bronze in fall, adding vivid late-season interest to borders, prairie gardens, and mixed plantings. In late summer, airy seed heads appear above the foliage, adding texture and winter appeal. A low-maintenance choice with strong visual impact, it brings movement, colour, and structure to sunny landscapes.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Grow Andropogon ‘Red October’ in full sun and average to dry, well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering—once established, it is drought tolerant. Avoid rich or wet soils, which can weaken stems. Leave foliage standing through winter for structure and wildlife value, then cut back in early spring before new growth begins. A low-maintenance native grass, it excels in sunny borders, prairie plantings, and naturalistic landscapes.
