Andropogon gerardii Rain Dance
Andropogon 'Rain Dance' from Emerald Coast Growers

Big Bluestem

About This Grass

'Rain Dance' features red-tipped foliage, deeper green than the species, that turns totally maroon in fall. In fact, cool temperatures enhance the red, tinting every blade maroon. Adding to the show are upright, rich red flower spike clusters up to 10 cms long on stems in varying tones of red. The seed heads branch into three parts, hence the common nickname "turkeyfoot grass". They open and dance in the breeze.
'Rain Dance' will be a gorgeous array of red, maroon, scarlet and green tones. The blooms appear from approximately August until frost, but the gorgeous, vibrant colouring gives it interest in summer and winter alike. 'Rain Dance' retains the toughness and self-sufficiency that make A. gerardii a great choice for difficult sites.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Andropogon is not a fussy grower. It will tolerate just about any soil or moisture level as long as full sun is provided. Lean to average soils are best, as too much fertility will cause the plants to be more open and floppy in habit. It is very low maintenance and long lived once established.
