About This Grass
Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus' is a popular antique variety of Miscanthus that has been used in gardens since the turn of the century. This grass really glows in the garden because of the predominance of white in the foliage. The habit is cascading although it has not required staking in our garden. Give this grass plenty of room to grow but it does not spread aggressively. It requires a very long, hot growing season to be able to produce flowers. When it does, the plumes appear in early fall and open with strong red tints. As the seeds mature, they become fluffy, and are a great accent to the almond coloured winter foliage.

Growing and Maintenance Tips
Miscanthus prefers moist but well drained soil in full sun to partial sun. It is adaptable to many soil types including clay and sandy soils. The clump expands slowly by short rhizomes but will retain a tight clumping form. The foliage should be left standing throughout the winter for visual interest and to provide protection for the crown.
