Golden Variegated Hakone Grass

About This Grass

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' is an intriguing grass which is perfect for the formal garden and wonderful in hosta gardens. It has an unusual flowing shape like a waterfall with all of the leaves arching in the same direction. It can be a little slow to establish in our climate, requiring rich and evenly moist soil in partial shade. Plant all varieties of Hakone grass where they will cascade down slopes, drape over rocks, crawl over the edges of walls, at the front of the garden, or use it in containers for shady sites. Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' is a variegated grass that is nearly all yellow except for the very fine narrow green edge. When grown in more sun, the yellow tones in the leaves will be most pronounced. In deep shade, the variegation will be more lime green. Tiny, inconspicuous flower spiklets appear in airy clusters from late summer thru mid-fall. This grass dislikes competition from tree roots and drying out.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Hakone Grass grows best in shaded woodland environments where the soil is moist and fertile. It does not grow well in clay soils and those that dry out. It also dislikes competition from tree roots. It is a slow grower and seldom needs division. In Zone 4 leave the old foliage on for the winter and do not remove fallen leaves or provide additional protection with evergreen boughs.
