Carex muskingumensis

Palm Sedge

About This Grass

Carex muskingumensis is a North American native grass that is found in the wild in swampy areas or moist woodlands. It makes a dense, slowly spreading clump and it useful in garden design for its foliage effect not its bloom which is insignificant. The rigid, erect stems have lighter green leaves radiating from the stem tops which give it the look of miniature palm fronds, hence the common name of Palm Sedge. The flowers appear in the summer and persist until fall. It is a versatile plant growing in both sun and partial shade in average to wet soil including the edge of a pond. If it is in too much shade it will have a tendency to flop.
