Carex are not actually true grasses but are grouped with the Ornamental Grasses because they have the same appearance and are used the same way in garden design. Carex hachijoensis 'Evergold' is a very popular Carex because of its lovely colouration and unique fountain-like habit. This selection has creamy-yellow leaves with a deep green margin. It develops a lovely cascading shape like a fountain. It makes an excellent groundcover and is also interesting in pots. In a severe winter it may suffer from die back in our area. In the spring it will benefit from a spring trim to clean up winter damage.
Carex 'Evergold' will grow in average well drained soil in light to partial shade. It will not tolerate wet conditions in the winter. Because it is evergreen situate it away from winter winds and provide it with some extra protection in the form of evergreen boughs or dry straw. Cut back the foliage in the spring if winter damage is excessive. Dead blades can also be teased out to freshen the plant.
