PERENNIALS: GENERAL LISTING

Every year we add new plants to our list and withdraw other plants for propagation. If you saw something in last year’s catalogue that does not appear this year it is probably because our stock is too low to list it.   Because we are constantly collecting and propagating plants our catalogue changes significantly every year. We also add many new varieties throughout the growing season.  If you visit the nursery you are sure to find some interesting “gem” that is not in the catalogue.

Please ask if you are looking for something in particular. You can contact us anytime by fax at (613) 256-6827 or by e-mail at suzanne@whitehouseperennials.com to check on plant availability.

Because it is not in this list does not mean we don't have it.

The plants in the perennial section have all proven hardy in the trial gardens at the nursery for at least one winter.  Many factors affect how hardy plants will be including snow cover, drainage, use of winter mulches and microclimates within individual gardens. The best sources of information are often local gardening societies and publications specific to individual regions of Canada. In the words of the plant collector and gardening guru Tony Avent, “I consider every plan hardy until I have killed it myself three times”. Don’t be afraid to try a plant in your own garden despite what the zones might say.  We have had many more successes than failures with plants outside their recommended zones.

Pricing: Our plants range from the common to the unusual and from the easy to propagate to the slow and difficult to propagate. Our prices reflect these variables. We believe that we offer excellent value for the price. Compare our prices and the size of the plants to other nurseries. We think you will be pleased with both our prices and quality.

Plant Sizes: We sell most of our perennials in 1 to 2 gallon pots and freshly dug from the field. All divisions that we sell are strong and well rooted. We believe that customers don’t want to wait for years to have a nice looking plant..

PERENNIAL GARDENING GUIDE 4th Edition

By John Valleau

We have hundreds of books in our library but we always turn to this reference first. It is a Canadian publication with zoning references for our climate.  Updated and enlarged for 2003 it is fully illustrated with hundreds of detailed photographs in colour.  The book contains sections on perennials, ground covers, ornamental grasses, herbs and ferns.  Many of the newest cultivars on the market are listed making it one of the most up to date reference books available. We recommend that everyone, from beginner to expert, should add this book to their collection.
